What the Manolo Is…

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010
By Manolo the Shoeblogger

Manolo says, it is Tuesday, time to see what the Manolo is…

Listening to…

Watching…

Reading…

The Manolo has the very funny AutoTuned songs of the talented Gregory Brothers stuck inside of his head. And now, all he hears all day long is the words “backing up, backing up, backing up,” or “hide your wife and hide your kids, hide your husbands, too.”

Bedazzled!

Uniforms for Aging Hipsters

Manolo says, our friend Mr. Henry on modern uniforms.

That’s it, guys, the new-millennial uniform for aged hipsters. It’s a good look, casual yet savvy. At least it’s not black – the default fashionista uniform.

Manolo the Columnist: Tina from Botkier

By Manolo the Shoeblogger

Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column from the Express of the Washington Post.

Dear Manolo,

My fortieth birthday is approaching at the end of next week, and I’m beginning to suspect that my husband is going to throw a surprise party for me. At least that’s what I hope he’s doing with all of the furtive phone calls and skulking about. Anyhoo, this means that I’m going to have to wear makeup and good clothes pretty much 24/7 until the event comes off. Can you recommend some festive shoes that aren’t too obvious?

Suzanne

Manolo says, ayyyyy! The Manolo loves the surprise parties! One minute you are minding your own business, accompanying the loved one to his home for the “simple dinner”, and the next, people are leaping at you from behind couches.

Of the course, this letter sounds like the obverse of the set up for the episode of every domestic sitcom ever made, in which Lucy suspects that Ricky is having the affair, and ends up wrecking her surprise party with the hilarious hi-jinks.

In this version, however, Lucy suspects that Ricky is organizing the surprise party, but he is really having the affair with Ethel Mertz, which Lucy wrecks with the hilarious, and fatal hi-jinks. Final scene: Lucy being led off to the gas chamber by the priest, played by special guest star Red Skelton.

Look! Here is the Tina from Botkier, the celebratory leopard-print peep-toe that Lucy would have favored if she had received the last minute pardon from the governor, as played by Milton Berle.

Reed Krakoff Shearling Sandal for the Thursday

Reed Rakoff Shearling Sandals

Manolo says, these Reed Krakoff shearling sandals are simply stunning in this dove-gray-on-gray combination (indeed, they make the entire outfit for Our Miss Amanda Brooks over at the website of the marvelous Garance Doré’s).

What the Manolo loves most about this shoe is that it is at once restrained and sensual; the perfect combination of the Apollonian and the Dionysian. It has the clean, intellectual lines, and yet one can feel the pleasure-giving softness of the shearling.

If, you are looking for super fantastic shoes you could not do better than the latest collection from the Reed Krakoff, the name you will be hearing more of in the immediate future.

Jerome Rousseau Two-Tone Loafer Pumps for the Monday

Monday, September 13th, 2010
By Manolo the Shoeblogger

Manolo says, it is Monday and you are back at your desk doing that thing that you do to earn that money that you need. Yes, working at the place of employment is not the favorite way to spend your weekdays, but it is better than the alternative, which involves living under the overpass and pushing the stolen shopping cart filled with plastic soda bottles.

Ayyy! The Manolo exaggerates. If you lose the job you will not be living under the overpass.

No, your fate will be much, much worse.

You will have to move back in with your parents!

Thus, it is better to buckle up and/or down and work hard, so as to avoid that terrible fate.

And, if you work very hard, perhaps soon, when the economy turns around, maybe in the not too distant future, before the robots take over, you can afford the beautiful shoes.

Manolo the Columnist: Dingo from Aster Kids

Friday, September 10th, 2010
By Manolo the Shoeblogger

Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.

Dear Manolo,

After what seemed like an interminable summer, my two daughters, ages 5 and 7 have gone back to school. Can you recommend some cute shoes for them?

Diane

Manolo says, this is the question that should perhaps be asked of some other feetwear expert, for the Manolo holds the most outdated notions of what the childrens should be wearing.

For the example, the Manolo is still very “pro” Little Lord Fauntleroy for the small boys, although from what the Manolo’s friends tell him, such clothing would be the quickest way to introduce your little man to something called the “atomic wedgie,” which sounds most unpleasant.

As for the girls, everywhere the Manolo looks, the little girls are being dressed up like the miniature hussies, in the cut-off mini-Hooters t-shirts and the Duke of Daisy shorty-shorts.

Sadly, from what the Manolo can see, the only place one can purchase the respectable and cute clothing for the childrens is from expensive specialty retailers, with fanciful names like “Bu and the Duck”, “Papo d’Anjo” and and “Your Superiorly Special Child Outshines All Others In His Custom-Made, All Organic Cotton, Nostalgia-Inspired Trousers.”

Of the course, if your goal is to shod your child in the well-made classic that will never go out of style, than the Manolo must recommend the Dingo from Aster Kids in the red leather.
