Keeping shoes looking pretty

I love my shoes, and would like to build up my collection, but I have one horrible problem when it comes to my beloved heels. I spend my time commuting between two cities that both are murder on heels. They have narrow grating, raised cobblestones and paving - everything that shreds the leather off covered heels in a heartbeat and scratches all other heels beyond recognition. Is there anything to be done about this, or should I just come to terms with the fact that all my shoes with have dented and damaged heels until I move somewhere else?
