Manolo says, “In a program, you know, acknowledging my Higher Power, trying to make amends. Spend a lot of time recycling. Hitting spots behind the Safeway plaza and in the park. Five cents a can adds up real fast, but you gotta be there before the crusties, know what I mean. Hey, you gotta cigarette I can bum, while I fill out this application?”
Manolo says, it is Monday, another day on the hamster wheel.
Here is the thought: what ever happened to those lazy, crazy, hazy, dazys of summer?
You know, those long, long July days when you were twelve, riding your bike through the neighborhood with your best friend Melody and your crew of pre-teen miscreants.
Well, “miscreant” is not the right word, as not only were you the bookworm, specializing in Laura Ingalls Wilder, with the subspeciality in Lucy Maud Montgomery, but Melody would grow up to become the pastoral administrator at St. Amandus, the imposing woman in sensible shoes and navy blue, who has been known to cause young priests to shake with fear.
But things seemed so much simpler back in the day. Your mother kicked you and your siblings out of the house right after breakfast, locked the door, and shouted through the screen “Don’t come back until lunch time”. (Today, such commonsensical, summertime behavior would be considered child abuse.)
So, you went down the block, found the other children whose mothers had ejected them from their homes, and formed the pack, which, without the distraction of video games, got up to all sorts of entertaining analog hijinks, such as dress-up dolly, neighborhood hide and go seek, building hideouts from old refuse found along the creek, and because there were more boys in your hood, also such violent favorites as buck buck, and throwing rocks at each other.
But now, your children sit at home exercising their thumbs texting, texting, texting.
Look! Beautiful shoes for the fall…

The advice you gave last week to the lady who wanted sandals for the end of summer struck a note with me, in that it started me thinking about the fall and what sort of shoes I should be wearing when it arrives. Can you recommend something both casual and somewhat on-trend for when the summer ends?
Manolo says, it is only natural, that we should all be desiring the end to this interminable summer of suffering, that we should be anticipating the arrival of more tolerable weather, which will bring with it the new season of clothing.
As for the major trends of this new season, the Manolo has been delighted by the rise of the lounge loafers (a.k.a the Belgian slippers) to stylishness.
How wonderful it is to see these ultra-comfortable shoes having their moment in the fashion spotlight, especially as we have recently been in the era of the 6-inch stiletto-heeled, ultra-narrow, high-fashion torture shoes.
It is as if all the smart girls got together, placed their Birkin bags on the sacrificial fire, and cried out, “Ouch! We implore you, fashion gods, please give us something that will not mutilate our toes.”
And from their aerie on Mount Louboutin, the fashion gods looked down upon their votaries and thundered, “So shall it be written. Bring back the lounge loafers.”
And the fashion girls shouted, “Huzzah!”
