Good Lord! Malkovich is wearing his wristwatch over his cuff! Is this something new in men’s fashions?

No, the wristwatch-over-cuff affectation is not particularly new in men’s fashion. It was popularized many, many years ago by Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli who wore his watch in that style. Style-icon Agnelli also popularized the unbuttoned collar on the button-down dress shirt, and the wearing of neckties outside of sweaters. Many of these fashion statements remain popular in Italy today.
It’s not surprising that the cuff-approach did not take off in the U.S. It’s tedious to remove your watch every time you want to roll up your sleeves.

Perhaps the Malkovich is not pensive, but plotting; that is not a wristwatch but a GPS bracelet affixed to him by his enemies. What will he do now? He can run, but he cannot hide!

The watch-over-the-cuff affectation seems a bit tacky to me. The fine timepiece, it does not need to be waved about like the flag. Those who understand will notice.
I’ve never needed to “show off” the vintage Patek. Quality draws attention on its own.

I actually like the watch over the cuff. Sometimes I do that myself, if my watch is too big and likes to flip around, or if I have really long sleeves that cover up the face, or if I wear this one watch that has cheap metal that gives me a rash on my wrist. And I love John Malkovich.

Pensive or not, the Malkovich remains a very attractive man. Even with the visible watch display.

Well, from a practical point of view, perhaps the Malkovich is wearing the watch over the cuff simply to stop the band painfully tweaking the longer arm hairs of the male ? The expanding watch band in particular can be quite the instrument of torture (my own father has stopped wearing his watch for this reason) , and although this looks like a standard watch strap, maybe the buckle it annoys him, which is my own reason for stopping the wearing of the wristwatches.
