Boots for the Big Calves
Manolo says, the Manolo he cannot tell you how many times he receives the emails such as the following from his internet friends.
Dear Manolo,
I have a strange problem that has plagued me for years. I have extremely large calves. Not a normal problem, except when I want to buy some knee-high boots!! It’s impossible. I have tried everywhere, I have tried J.Crew which offers wider calf sizes, I have dried elastic insets, I have tried it all and still have no knee-boots. Last time I measured, they were 15-16 inches around (my calves that is!)! No joke. (No risk of cankles here, my ankles are the opposite and are tiny!). Is there any maker you know of, offering boots for larger calves? Should I get custom made boots? Where do you even go to get custom boots? Please help me, I am begging you!
Soulfully searching for boots,
Karin
This problem it is sadly one that usually did not have the satisfactory solution. Typically, the boots for the girls of the big calves, they are inferior in the quality and style, and the Manolo he will not recommend such things to his friends.
However, now there appears to be at least one of the better designers of the shoes who is addressing this problem. Behold, the Lumiani 69 Extra Calf!
This boot it is made in Italy, and is of the better quality, and the style it is not bad. However, for the Manolo’s friend, the best feature is that it has the circumference around the calf of 18 inches! This it should fit even the most athletic of the legs.

Here in Britain we have the fabulous Duo Boots which make fashionable boots in a wide range of calf sizes. Perhaps they ship to the US. I personally have five pairs http://www.duoboots.com/
But I wanted to draw the attention of the Manolo to this item about the history of Soviet lingerie

You might also try buying a pair of extended calf boots and getting the boot shafts stretched by a reputable cobbler. You can get the shafts of boots stretched up to 3-4 inches depending on the leather. A good cobbler should be able to give you a good estimate of how feasible it is to stretch a pair of boots.

The Texasexile also possesses the large calves (a result of genetics and running four times per week). I cannot tell you how many times I have coveted a pair of boots, only to find that I could not zip them. The boots of the Stuart Weitzman and some of the Via Spiga worked for me.

If only I could find knee-high leather boots that don’t gape around my 13″ calves. All the boots I can find in leather are so big at the top I can slide my hand inside beside my leg. Non-leather boots are usually tight enough, but they look so cheap.

Manolo-
I have the opposite problem! I have little birdy legs and ankles and can’t find a pair of boots that don’t sag or look like waders of some kind. Can you help me too?

duoboots.com! They’re UK-based, but they ship.
Build your own boots! Skinny legs, fat legs, all the ladies can have gorgeous, high-quality, custom-made boots. They’re out of my price range, but I’m saving my pennies.

All that enthusiasm, and I neglected to note that Duo Boots had been mentioned not once, but twice. Well: thirded.

The AmberJane, she is skipping around her office with the flappy hands of joy, grateful to the Manolo for pointing her to the boots for the girl with the calves of muscle.

A wise saleswoman at Stuart Weitzman taught me to point my toe when zipping up the boots–a perfect fit.

Indeed, Manolo, so many women have difficulty finding boots to fit around their calves that one might legitimately wonder whether the problem is not that so many women’s calves are, in fact, terrifically “big,” but rather that the fashion industry’s idea of “normal” is occasionally a bit–ahem–off?

I’ve found several places that carry “wide-calf” boots, but none seem as nice as duoboots! Thanks for posting the link, ladies – I just ordered a pair!

I also have ‘larger’ calves and a very hard time finding boots. But I recently found these Enzo boots at a local dept. store, and they fit my 15″ calves perfectly! So I bought them in black & brown.

Duo boots have got an online sale on at the moment, I just bought a gorgeous pair of boots – and Di, your legs would not be the slimmest they can fit, I think they start at 30cm, about 12 inches round, and as others have said make boots for athletic/chunky claves as well, lots of styles and colours.

Thanks for the link to duo boots! they have the size i need! my problem is i have TINY feet, small ankles, and gigantic calves. the boots that manolo recommended are beautiful, but the shoe sizes are TOO big! i can’t wait to receive my duo boots!
Isara 19 years ago
Oh thank you! Thank you! I usually end up purchasing half-calf boots, since nothing will fit around my 18″ calves!

Well, if you have both big calves and big feet (10+), check out Dreamshoes. All of their wide boots have wide (pardon the expression) shafts to fit a big calf.

Well, I too have 16″ calves, and I have the very boots Manolo recommended sitting in front of me in the Zappo’s box. (I bought them before I read this site.) They are supremely gorgeous, BUT–the calves are HUGE. If your calves are 18-19″, I think these would fit. I never thought I’d find calves TOO big for me. Sadly, I am returning them. (Although, at least that’s $300 I get back.)

First of all, love the Manolo. You are de best! And thanks to everyone who has included info on their wide calf boot purchases. This stuff is so helpful to us wide-calf girls. (And btw, I’m not overweight. My calves stay the same, even when my weight fluctuates.)
I too have 16″ calves and haven’t worn boots in years until recently. What big calf women need to keep in mind is that the larger the shoe size, the larger the calf. (i’m talking about how boots are made, not how YOU are :) ) If you’re a size 10 or larger and you order a “wide calf” boot, it will probably be huge. (such as the poster who posted here about the lumiani) The calf info on zappos is usually incorrect. For example, I found Two Lips Carla boots for $25(!) at Nordstorm rack. http://www.zappos.com/n/p?dp=2625281&c=6 In a size 10 their calf is 16 ” and fits me just fine. Yet zappos lists this boot as having a 12.5 calf! (Probably in a size 5 or something!) I would have never ordered it at Zappos based on their description.
A casual, urban-chic grrrrl boot for women with larger calves that I highly recommend is harley davidson ignite 13″. Check it out at zappos http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5777281/c/3.html What makes this design so ingenious is the tongue and lacing in the back. When I first saw it , I thought the lacing was purely decorative. But it’s what allows this boot to provide a custom fit for wearers with wide calves. At its widest point my size 10 boot measures 14.5 inches, not accounting for the tongue. At its widest point, the tongue measures 5 inches across. Which means, thanks to the tongue, this boot can expand for quite a few inches beyond 14.5. It should be able to be adjustable to fit calves of about 15 to 17 inches. (I’m allowing for 1 inch of tongue to be tucked into the boot on either side in my calculations.)Once you set the laces the way you want, you never have to do it again, since there is a zipper. The boot (size 10) measures 14 inches from instep to top of boot. This is a fairly high boot, but not super high. Very comfy right away.
I have checked out the duoboots website (found it before I found this thread) and was impressed with the style. I’m leery of buying such an expensive product from overseas. I hope someone who bought from them posts here with their experience (and includes their shoe size, calf info, etc.).

I am the proud owner of two pairs of fab Duo boots! they are fantastic! I splashed out £130 on my first pair and they are definatley worth it! I bought an english size 6 an my calf size is 17 1/2 inches, the feeling I had when they zipped up the first time is worth the money of both pairs!! Now most of my friends have ordered pairs aswell!
The delivery was very fast to the uk and are very quick to deal with my enquiry regarding my second purchase!
my advice is to go for it you wont regret it!

I’ve got wide feet and wide calves and have found the UK site We Love Your Feet
have a great range to choose from.
I’m a size 9 and have always found boots impossible to find.
Would definitely recommend looking at their wide fitting boots page

Thanks for the recommendations, I’ve gone on to both Duo and We Love Your Feet and found a pair I really like on Love your Feet.
They also had these great reflexology socks which show all the pressure points on the soles of your feet ,so I am determined to get my husband to get my feet some attention!
5 years married and still waiting for my foot massage!
