Dearest Manolo – Be not dismayed at the donkey-like braying of the unwashed Philistines of the Clay Aiken Fan club. Hold your head and your pen high and write on brother, write on!
“The donkey-like braying of the unwashed Philistines of the Clay Aiken fan club.” Bwhahahahaha! I love you, gemdiva. How in god’s name did they find the Manolo? Is there some kind of ever-vigilant network trawling the interwebs for any ill mention of his Clayness?
And my dear Manolo, the response to your witty post proves to me only one thing: on a rather recent but grand scale, senses of humor are somehow dying a sad death along with irony and disco and theory. This is not something we should give into but something we should fight with what I find to be your specialties–humor and style and grace.
Taking cheap shots at some guy, that everyone else is taking cheap shots at, gets so old. I don’t mind laughing at celebs when they do something stupid like throw up on a cop, but this guy hasn’t done anything to earn this abuse. He’s a nice guy which is no reason to kick him all the time.
Aikenites have always been a staunchly-supporting bunch; they LOVE him. Non-fans don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I say, let the comments rip. On both sides.
Debate is healthy.
(Poor old KD Lang was merely a casualty of this war! Poor thing got caught up in the histrionics without even knowing what was going on!)
The Annalucia lives in Chicago, and she has never heard of Clay Aiken either. Nor of Ruben. And now she will return to the Maryland Square catalog and the contemplation of the high-heeled silver pumps.
I was fascinated by the Clay Aiken wars on PerezHilton a while back. No matter what you say about Clay, if it’s anything other than “he is without flaw and beyond the perfection attainable by mortals” the Claymates will attack you en masse and without remorse or the slightest hint of self-awareness. It’s really quite Lord of the Flies. The sole positive thing that came out of the enormous shitstorm they raised was that one of them took time out to send me an aside saying “You’ve never heard him sing? Sometimes we fans forget that’s what it’s really about, so here’s a YouTube.” and hot damn, that boy can sing.
So can k d lang. Given the beauty of their voices, I’d say it’s a fair tradeoff, if tradeoff there must be.
A lot of people dont like clay but think of what clay has done and still doing for the kids clay is in the process of raiseing money for camps for the kids. Just think about this if your child wanted to go to one of the camps clay is raiseing money for and you would say no to your child ! all this is about the kids not clay its all about to make a difference!
Danilo, sorry to burst your bubble; but Clay did NOT lose the votes to Ruben. Two producers of AI even admitted Clay received 80 percent of the vote every single week (including the last if they all came in) Hasn’t Clay proven it by now??? What else do you want him to do to prove it to you?? What has Ruben done lately? Sang at a country fair that charged $15 admission??? Many other sources agreed that the one measly phone line with only 2 hours of voting capability could NOT handle the amount of votes coming in for Clay. The very next year AI increased the voting time to 4 hours and had 2-3 phone lines for each finalist. Clay’s fans are ‘militant’ not only because of our love for a fantastic person but because of the injustice forwarded to him by AI and other idiots who are so naive as to what happened that night. AI has sort of redeemed themselves due to the fact that they have invited Clay back as a guest more than any other performer and he hosted the 2003 Xmas special-leaving Ruben to look like a fool with his blue tongue and lame jokes at his expense. Felt sorry for the guy, though. He has a good voice but he is NO Clay Aiken and never will be. Clay’s resume is the most diverse and the largest of any of the AI performers combined! Get over the fact that the guy is one of the most talented performers and all-around nice guy.
One other thing: don’t you think every other performer out there would give their eye-teeth to have the fans that Clay has?? Especially Ruben, right now?? Fans=fame and money.

Manolo, no! Do not let the auto-troll setting on certain humorless fanbases

Manolo, no! Do not let the auto-troll setting of certain humorless fanbases limit the scope of your work. Please, sir, be strong.

Apologies for the near-double post. Clearly, I’m very upset.

I love it that nothing will ever change the fact that Clay lost the vote to Ruben.

Living in London I have NO IDEA who this Clay Aiken is.
But if Manolo thinks he is worth making jokes about then Joke On Dude.
Manolo is always right.

Remember the Kelly Clarkson Muffin-Top Wars of 2005? This reminds me of that. Those “Idol” fans are a touchy bunch, aren’t they?
(As a disclaimer, I love La Clarkson and I also agree that Clay Aiken has a wonderful voice. But these rabid fans are a riot!)

Since I’m in Berlin I’ve never even heard of Clay Whatshisname. But his fans don’t seem to have to much of the humour.

Good grief. It wasn’t that harsh of a joke, nor did it disparage his talent. Laugh a little, you’ll live longer.
