The Belly
The forced smiles?
The almost-underaged girl with the protruding belly in the white dress?
The smirking man in the formalwear who is just not into her?
Manolo says, it’s the shotgun wedding!
Ha! The Manolo he jokes.
Many of the internet friends of the Manolo they have taken the mild umbrage at the Manolo because he has poked the gentle fun at the belly-displaying ways of the Kelly Clarkson.
And so, by way of the response, the Manolo he has decided to post this picture of the normally willowy Katie Holmes to make the point about the bellies and the fashion. That even the tall, thin, beautiful womens they must be careful of their fashion choices, for the belly it has the way of popping out.
The Kelly Clarkson and the Katie Holmes, they have made the similar mistakes. They are the small-bosomed womens who have chosen the outfits that diminish the breasts and accentuate the bellies. The Kelly she has compounded this mistake by further calling the attention to the belly with the cropped t-shirt and the ridiculous jewelry of the belly button.
There is nothing wrong with the shape of either the Kelly or the Katie. There is, however, something wrong with the clothes.

Yes, Manolo…I agree.
The fashion of the belly should be way over…much like the poncho.
I have seen too many of the bellys, in all sizes. It is rare to see one display
the belly in a truly fashionable way. I cringe when I see the normally lovely young girl bulging (and I speak of all sizes, not just the six-pack or the twelve-pack) out of low jeans with the thongs and belly rings flashing…an image that can distract mightily from other qualities. Clothes/fashion should suggest and flatter and spark imagination.
Please, let the belly fashion be over soon!

Disagreed. Both those bellies are perfectly normal womanly curves. The only problem with Katie’s dress is that the seam at croch level and the ensuing tiers prevent the rest of the dress from following the curves of her legs, which makes the totally normal stomach look like it’s sticking “out.” If the line continued downwards, it would be a smooth, natural curve.

I agree with the Manolo, that the dress of the Katie and the shirt of the Kelly, they should be reconsidered, as they do not flatter the figures of the young ladies. The bellies of the young ladies are not the problem, but the clothes, they are poorly matched with those bellies.
The Manolo, he might have the migraine over the misunderstandings here. I would offer the Manolo the Advil, but he would probably prefer the martini.

Bitchphd, I think you actually do agree with Manolo — he is saying, the bodies are lovely, the clothing choices are not. Here’s the important quote:There is nothing wrong with the shape of either the Kelly or the Katie. There is, however, something wrong with the clothes.
I agree in particular about the unfortunate tiered skirt on that dress Katie is wearing. A long straight line could transform a fashion disaster into something really lovely.
I also commend the Manolo on working in the shotgun wedding joke, which cracked me up!

I agree with the manolo, katie’s dress is decidedly unflattering to her figure. And is it just me, or is katie taller then the tom cruise?
Alice 19 years ago
Everyone is taller than the Tom Cruise. Does fashion, though, limit the clothes the woman with the nice, curvy belly can wear? Don’t many fashions appear designed for the women without the belly?

True. I think perhaps we are all a bit sensitive on this issue, when we women are so often told we cannot be Super Fantastic unless we resemble anthropomorphic stick insects. But this is not the Manolo’s fault.
Besides, I for one should have made my first comment to the Manolo not to quibble, but to say thank you for all the entertainment and links the Manolo has provided. It was thanks to the Manolo that I found Zappos.com, and I am grateful, even if I bought boots of which the Manolo would likely disapprove.

It’s pretty sad that her belly protrudes farther than her nearly non-existent boobs… Sad indeed.

The poor Katie – her belly, it is all due to the posture. If the dear sweet Katie Holmes would simply date a man approaching her own height, she would not find it necessary to adopt the unflattering slouch when posing for the unconvincing “We’re in love, honest” photograph opportunities, which pushes out her adorable belly.
The Kelly Clarkson, she has no excuse. (The Lexington Green, in comments to the below post, has the perfect word for describing the Kelly’s dreadful wailings – “execrable” – which has always been one of my favourite disparaging words.)

The Manolo, he is correct. It is time for the fashions that bare the bellies to be over. It is time for super-low rise pants to be banished to only those who would walk the streets to earn a living. How can a fashion that causes even slender women to bulge out over their waistbands be called attractive? Truly, the age of the low-rise, thong exposing pant must come to an end.
Art History Major 19 years ago
Disagreed. Her figure is very beautiful, and her belly is very feminine.
People have to look at more paintings of naked women throughout history to get such an appreciation. Don’t worry, there’s no shortage of such paintings.

And the belly is the reason I carefully choose the undergarments to wear under the formal dress. I may be skinny, but as long as I’m putting the effort into a fancy frock, superfantastic shoes, and hair and makeup besides, it is not too much more to buy some tummy flattening thing.

Ah, I am relieved at The Manolo’s clarification. And CatherineAZ is most correct, the belly shirt, like the poncho, should be declared “over”…it is not a look that flatters many. Accessorized with duct tape, as Miss Clarkson’s top appears to be, it is even worse. The joke shotgun wedding between the towering Miss Holmes and the diminutive Clam, however, made me laugh and laugh.
La BellaDonna 19 years ago
La BellaDonna, she is a bit dubious about the angle at which the photo was taken. The Katie is standing in such a way that it is entirely possible that we are actually seeing the curve of the hip of the Katie, and not the Gothic curve of the belly of the Katie. (Hola to the Art History Major! One of La BellaDonna’s favorite periods; she has even made the several of the late 14thC gowns, for she finds them utterly graceful.)
The fluffy ruffles around the hips, they are taxing even for the goddesses, let alone the mere mortals (even in the Hollywood, they are still the “mere mortals,” albeit with superior resources). La BellaDonna, she thinks the young ladies of Hollywood -and the not-so-young ladies of Hollywood – would benefit from following the example of the Art History Major, and study art to find their own figures in history, and thereby learn the clothing styles that would best suit them.
*La BellaDonna says, Ha! and reminds the Manolo that as long as the Katie, she has the shotgun, she does not have to marry the Tom Cruise!

tia agrees with the Magdalena who says that the time for the belly-baring pants and tops is over. They are universally unflattering.
Hola also, Art History Major! I am thinking of the belly of the Botticelli Venus as a particularly nice example.

Likewise the Primavera:

But even the the Venus would look awful in the low-rise jeans and belly-baring midriff top. And the Primavera has appropriately chosen a lovely spring floral dress.

Don’t you think that part of this may be as a result of her “slouching” so that she doesn’t tower over the Cruise? I don’t think she has adopted the “flats only” style that the Kidman did when she was the arm candy of the Cruise.

Oh Manolo don’t apologize for trashing the shirt of the belly. It is pretty much always unappealing and unnecessary unless one is playing a trashy bimbo in a skit at cheerleading summer camp. It is equally as stupid looking on any weight or age of woman (or man) And navel jewelry… Why? The navel itself is decoration enough for that area.
lindenen 19 years ago
That would be her belly if her shoulders were perpendicular to the photographer, but they’re not. Her shoulders are turned too much and you can see her chest. It’s a combination hip/odd angle. And yes, the dress is awful anyway.

Thanks tia for posting the reminders of the Botticellis – what a breath of fresh air! After looking at photos of modern celebrities day after day, it’s nice to remember that women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes I forget! (Thanks Hollywood)

Ms. Holmes is a lovely young woman. What she sees in the Cruise is beyond me.

Bellies, bellies everywhere. I call it the slut-Barbie look. I keep thinking, maybe *this* is the year slut-Barbie will die … but each year she returns.
And can we talk about the load-in-their-pants look for guys? Enough already! I see America’s crack problem everywhere, and I am SO over it!
