Manolo Takes Note

Manolo says, the Vogue in the UK, they have the few words about the Manolo the Shoeblogger.

A NEW YORKER who goes by the name Manolo the Shoeblogger has been delighting the fashion pack this year with bitchy snippets about high-profile individuals, calling John Galliano, for instance, a “freaky little fashion troll” and Gerard Depardieu “slovenly and outwardly repulsive”. Rather disappointingly, the cutting remarks haven’t been coming from Manolo Blahnik himself, although the great man doesn’t seem at all bothered by the gossip the cyber blog has generated. “Manolo the Shoeblogger? Sorry, not me. But it’s very funny, isn’t it? Hilarious,” Blahnik told The Times.

The correct quote about the Galliano, it is “funky little fashion troll.

And as for the Depardieu, the full quote, it is “yes the Depardieu he is slovenly and outwardly repulsive, but at the same time is there not something magnetic?”

The Manolo he tries not to be overly cruel.

UPDATE: Ayyyy! The Manolo’s internet friend, the La Lola, she has pointed out that the Manolo he has indeed, on at least one of the occasions, referred to the Galliano as the “freaky little fashion troll” (although the phrase “funky little fashion troll,” it is far more common). And now the Manolo he must apologize to those whom he has mischaracterized as mischaracterizing him.

Manolo the Shoeblogger is not Manolo Blahnik!

Manolo says, for the thousandth time, the Manolo the Shoeblogger, he is not the Maestro Manolo Blahnik. The humble Manolo the Shoeblogger, he is barely worthy to shine the most super fantastic shoes of the Manolo Blahnik.

Look, this confusion it is even mentioned in the opening paragraphs in the fascinating article about the Maestro Manolo Blahnik today in Times of the London.

It’s a good thing that I checked with Lesley, Manolo Blahník’s trusted press secretary and right-hand woman, that Manolo, sorry Mr Blahník (she calls him this), isn’t in fact the same Manolo who described John Galliano in his online blog as a “freaky little fashion troll”, or captioned a picture of Hugh Hefner looking old in a Hawaiian shirt with the words “someone call the coroner”. That Manolo, says Lesley, is an impostor, some guy in New York who is obsessed with shoes and uses the pseudonym “Manolo the Shoeblogger” to launch his bitchy sartorial bombs.

Although Lesley is understandably concerned about this issue, when she broke the news I thought it a bit of a shame. Recently a journalist attributed Manolo the Shoeblogger’s thoughts on Gérard Depardieu (“he is slovenly and outwardly repulsive”) to Manolo the Shoemaker, and I had been looking forward to meeting this rare creature, a straight-talking famous person.

Ayyyy! The Manolo the Shoeblogger he is indeed distressed to think that others may be confusing the Manolo with the Maestro Manolo Blahnik. Yes, both the Manolo and the Manolo Blahnik are named the “Manolo” (which it is the very common Spanish name), and yes both the Manolo and the Manolo Blahnik love the shoes, but there the similarity it mostly ends.

So, to recap, the Manolo the Shoeblogger he is not the Manolo Blahnik.

Update! Here is the best quote in the entire article, from the Maestro Manolo Blahnik himself!

“Manolo the Shoeblogger? Sorry, not me. But it’s very funny, isn’t it? Hilarious!”

Ayyyyyy! Such praise! The Shoeblogger is hyperventilating!

Manolo Unveiled!

Manolo says, the Manolo unveiled! Sort of!

P.S. Here is the other photo of the Manolo, this one with the information about the shoes the Manolo he was wearing.

P.P.S. The Manolo, his shoe size it is between the ten-and-the-half and the eleven in the American scale.

The Winners! The Winners!

Manolo says, at the last the Manolo and his judges, the magnificent Miss Meghan Cleary and the wonderful Jane Eldershw, they have selected the following winners and runners up to the Manolo’s Super Fantastic Essay Contest.

And now, it is the great pleasure of the Manolo to announce that the Super Fantastic Grand Prize First Place Winner of the Manolo’s Super Fantiastic Essay Contest it is the Valeria Fate of the Munster, Indiana!

The Valeria she submitted this magnificent homage to the Coleridge and the Manolo’s Shoe Blog.

THE PLEASURE DOME OF MANOLO
(A Lost Poem of Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

In cyberspace, Manolo did
A pleasure dome of shoes decree;
Where girls of well-turned ankle ran
In Kenneth Cole boots of calf and tan
Through fields of Will’s Fancy.
There Cynthia Rowleys strewn o’er the ground
With Mary Jane straps were girdled round;
And Isaac Mizrahis bright with crystal bling,
And rhinestone blossoms on Claudia Ciuti toes;
Suede Jimmy Choos to make a sad heart sing,
And Prada sandals, green as the leaves of a rose.

But oh! The hall of horrors one must pass
To reach the land of the style and taste–
Cheap plastic flipflops! Ugly and crass,
Birkenstocks that look like the ass,
Uggs fashioned from the steaming toxic waste!
And in this chasm, with cruel malice seething,
As if in super-tight vinyl pants he were breathing,
Demon Lagerfeld lingers, and lurks, and laughs.
Beneath his foul bloviating bursts
Echo the cries of the deluded few:
“But these Crocs were cheap, and comfortable too!”
This tasteless tumult Manolo heard from far,
And cried out, “Ayyyyy! This, it means the war!”
He then brought forth the dome of foot fashion pleasure,
With Beverly Feldmans making up the walls;
For flooring, fair Coach wedges beyond measure,
And Miu Miu ceilings for its marbled halls.
Ah, how it did allure the style-starved hordes,
This pleasure dome of Blahnik, Delman, Kors!

Fore’er shall I linger in this pleasure dome–
Caovillas like fire! Cole Haans, cool as ice!–
And if the Lagerfeld I see there,
Shall throw a Pucci and shout, “Beware!”
He shall not besmirch our shoeland fair!
Praise the Manolo, praise him twice,
Standing in Zanotti wedges tall;
For he hath made for one and all
A super fantastic paradise.

This entry it was by far the favorite of the Miss Meghan and was easily in the top three of the Manolo and the Jane Eldershaw. It is both remarkably funny and very well written. It is easy to write the parody of the poem. But it is most difficult to write the parody of the poem that stands up as well to the original as this one does.

********

The Super Fantastic Second Place Winner of the Manolo’s Super Fantastic Essay Contest it is the Alicia DiDonato, of the Cambridge, Massachusetts for her marvolous short story, Hemingway Loves Shoes. (Click on the Alicia’s name to read her story.)

The Jane Eldershaw had this to say about the entry of the Alicia, “Very original, very stylish, and over all, superfantastic — for me it is everything the Manolo was looking for. And doesn’t this encapsulate what all of us shoe-aholics, deep down, believe? That everyone — our audience, our friends, the people who admire us — may have known better women, but, by God, none with such wonderful shoes!”

********

The Super Fantastic Third Place Winner of the Manolo’s Super Fantastic Essay Contest it is the Christine Stone of the Marietta, Georgia. The Christine she submitted the very funny “Going Out of Business Sale!”, this story that made the Manolo laugh, and it reminded him of the importance of the shoes in the fairy tales.

********

The Manolo he is also awarding the prizes to the Super Fantastic Runners Up:

Erin Carstens of the Seattle, WA, for the essay “I Shoes: The Manifesto”

Charlotte Allen, of the Washington, District of the Columbia, for “Torment”.

Laura Kluvo wrote the wonderful poem, “A Pagent Notice Appears in the Walk-in Closet”

Brenda J. Viola of the Springfield, Pennsylvania for her essay “Why I Love The Shoes”.

Tara Helfman of New Haven, Connecticut for the “Back to School Special”

All of these entries they were very strong, and they made the chosing of the winners most difficult indeed.

********

The Manolo he is also giving away the special Super Fantastic Knitters Prize for the peoples who wrote about the knitting or crocheting or identified themselves as the knitters or the fiber artists. The prize it is the special package of the yarns from the nice peoples at the Lion Brands and the Lion Brands blog, the Kloseknit.

Happy Birthday!!!!

Manolo shouts,

Happy Birthday!!!

Happy Birthday to the Manolo’s Shoe Blog!!!!

One year ago exactly today, the Manolo he invented the shoe blog. As the first shoe blogger it was the intention of the Manolo to share with the world his love of the shoes and the fashion and the fun. And, the blog, it has succeeded beyond the wildest expectations. Even the better, soon after the Manolo started, other shoe and purse and fashion blogs sprang up like the spring flowers after the rain, and so the internets it became the beautiful, chaotic place of the hundred wonderful fashion blogs.

What now lies ahead for the Manolo and humble shoe blogs?

There are things coming that will astound and amuse the many internet friends of the Manolo.

For the example, this evening, the Manolo he will announce the winners of his Super Fantastic Essay Contest, and you will be able to read some of the wonderful stories that were submitted to the contest.

And then tomorrow, on the Monday, there will be the big announcement of the new relationship that will bring the wider readership and exposure to the blogs of the Manolo.

Going forward from this place, there are other things planned. Already, you have been introduced to the all new Manolo for the Brides, and to the Never teh Bride, the very funny blogger who the Manolo found to revive his languishing bride blog.

This it is only the first step in what the Manolo hopes will become the small network of the quality fashion and humor blogs, blogs written by talented and funny people, like the Never teh Bride, and published under the editorial guidence of the Manolo. Yes, it is true, the Manolo he would like to be like the Martha Stewart on the internets, only much, much nicer and with the better shoes.

So, look over the coming months for new blogs from the Manolo, new blogs featuring new and distinctive voices. It will be the quality of the writings, not so much the topic, that will distinguish the blog network of the Manolo.

And there is more, much more planned for the future, things almost too super fantastic to be mentioned. But, do not worry, the Manolo he has no intention of changing his Shoe Blog. It is the true labor of the love, the touchstone for all he does.

Hello to the Brides!

Manolo says, the Manolo’s internet friend the Kristen at the Express of the Washington Post, she has written the small review of the Manolo for the Brides.

If his biweekly column isn’t enough for you, Manolo the Shoeblogger has relaunched his Manolo for the Brides. Though the Manolo will drop in from time to time, blogger “Never teh [sic] Bride” is the star of this wedding party, serving up slices of grandeur/hubris like an Empire State Building wedding cake complete with mini-King-Kong and Fay Wray. She’ll appeal to anyone who has a sense of humor about weddings–i.e. brides not getting married in the next month or so. Part etiquette handbook, part style guide, part time-waster, the site is a welcome addition to the often nauseating world of wedding blogs.

The Manolo he can add nothing but that you should be reading the Never teh Bride daily.

The Contest it is Over!

Manolo says, the contest of the Manolo it is now officially over! The Manolo he has received nearly 500 of the entries, and although he has not read many of them yet, he can already see that the quality of the entries it is most high indeed.

Over the next week, the Manolo and his judges, the Miss Meghan Cleary and the Jane Eldershaw, they will reading the entries closely, in the effort to narrow them down to the winners.

At the end of the week, on the Sunday evening, the 16th of the October, the first anniversary of the blog of the Manolo, the Manolo he will publish the names of the winners, along with their stories, and perhaps the handful of the runners up.

So, it is only six more days until we shall know the outcome. And so the Manolo he wishes good luck to all of the Manolo’s internet friends who have submitted the entry!

Manolo’s Many Thanks!

Manolo says, it is the last day to enter the Manolo’s Super Fantastic Essay Contest and the Manolo he must now thank the many, many wonderful peoples and companies who have contributed the prizes to make this the super fantastic event it truly is.

First up, the nice people at the Shoebuy.com. Not only are they the marvelous online store for the shoes, but they now even have their own blog devoted to the shoes. You must visit, as the Suma Kashi who blogs the blog she knows the shoes.

Then it is the Zappos. What is there that can be said about the Zappos, but that it is the revolutionary company, one that puts the customers first, and in so doing has become the biggest shoe store on the interweb.

And then there is the Shoes.com. This it is always one of the first stops on the Manolo’s daily search for the shoes, and so you can be certain that the Manolo is thankful for their participation.

Next, to be thanked, there is no person like her in the world, no one who combines such joie de vivre with the sense of outrageousness and the love of the shoes like the Beverly Feldman.

No listings of the peoples whom are owed by the Manolo the debt of gratitude would be complete without the inclusion of the Magnolia Shoes. They produce the attractive and stylish designer shoes at the reasonable prices.

The Manolo he has recently thanked the Donna Barstow, but once could not be enough to properly express the gratitude of the Manolo for her amusing cartoon.

The Creative Queen she has lived up to her regal title with the gift of the most super fantastic Bootlegs.

The huge debt of thanks it is owed to the stylish and witty, Shoelover for the provision of the Clear Shoe Boxes, the brilliant idea well executed .

It is not the secret that the Manolo loves the books, books, books including the Joan DeJean’s lively history of French fashion and style in the court of the Louis XIV, The Essence of Style. It is the book that is most certainly worth the reading, and so many thanks are owed to the Joan for her participation, and for the writing of this book.

And then there is the Virginia Postrel, to the mind of the Manolo, the futurist and trend spotter of note, the foremost philosopher of style and fashion, who in her marvelous book The Substance of Style, says more in the first paragraph than most books say in 500 pages.

Of the course, the Manolo he must also thank his long-time internet friend the Kim for the contibution of her book, Pretty City New York

Finally, no thanks would be complete without the Manolo’s most profound gratitude being expressed to the judges of the Manolo’ s contest, the Jane Eldershaw, whose book Heart and Sole should be read by all, and to the Miss Meghan Cleary of the marvelous shoe book, The Perfect Fit.
